The Human Cost of Conflict

Today the SCCR had the privileged to host an event with the Faulty of Advocates with the purpose of creating a space for young people to discuss and learn about human rights.Through discussion some of the important things raised by young people included; knowing what your rights are, responsibilities, the cycle of poverty, bullying in schools, and issues of privacy.

There was an exploration of the legal system in relation to human rights and an important reflection was about how we have these discussions and where there may be conflicting ideas how we work though these in a non adversarial way.

What are the things that are important to you in relation to human rights? How can we, together bring about change and what, if anything could be different?

I find human rights seem on the surface quite logical and obvious. However when human rights are challenged and in particular, when in conflict with the human rights of others does the complex and sometime sensitive nature of ‘rights’ comes to the fore. This for me provides a great lifelong learning platform as new generations of human beings come into the world and their impact on the world, society, community and family.
